While searching for a job, it's crucial to safeguard your personal information from potential scams and fraudulent employers. Scammers may try to collect sensitive details, such as your banking information, under the guise of a job offer. Remember, legitimate employers will never ask for such information before you’ve accepted a job offer.
If you suspect that your personal information has been compromised, it's important to act quickly. Here are the steps you should take immediately:
1. Flag the employer (if they are on Handshake). Flagging the employer will alert our Trust & Safety team so they can review and take appropriate action. For more information, refer to Safety: Flagging an Employer on Handshake.
2. Report to local authorities. If you believe you've been targeted by a scam, contact your local police. The police handle fraud cases, even if the scammer is located elsewhere.
3. Contact your Bank. If you have shared any financial details or sent money to a fraudulent employer, contact your bank or credit card company immediately. They can help protect your accounts and dispute any unauthorised transactions.
4. Report it to your institution. Contact your Career Services Centre immediately if you believe you’ve been scammed. Your institution may be able to provide additional support or resources to assist you.
