Source ideal candidates and craft effective job campaigns with Handshake's curated, targeted audience.
Attach a job and Handshake will automatically generate a relevant audience for your campaign based on job requirements and description.
To create an event, fair, or branding campaign, refer to Campaigns: Create a Event, Fair or Branding Campaign.

Access campaigns
Click Campaigns from the left navigation bar in Handshake, then click the blue button Create Campaign in the upper-right corner of the page.
Create a campaign
In the pop-up modal, select Job (Promote jobs posted in Handshake, your applicant tracking system, or CRM).
Complete steps 1-4 to create and send your campaign.
Step 1: Which job is connected to this campaign?
Enter the name of the campaign in the Campaign name field. This will not be shown to students.
Note: only one job posting can be attached to a campaign regardless of the location.
- If the job is posted on Handshake, select Posted on Handshake, then choose the job from the Job dropdown.
- If the job isn't posted on Handshake, but is active in an applicant tracking system or CRM, select Posted externally.

- Enter the job title in the Job title field. This title will be shown to students.
- Enter the job URL in the URL field.
- Note: URL must begin with http:// or https://.
- Enter the city and state in the Location field. (optional)
If you want to give candidates the opportunity to get insight and advice about this job from an advocate, select the teammate from the Teammate dropdown.
- To remove a teammate selected, click the X to the far right of their name.
When the fields are completed, click the blue button Continue in the lower-right corner of the page.
Step 2: Define audience and goals
We automatically created an audience of qualified students who are likely to be interested in the job.
Review job requirements
This job audience automatically matches the job's requirements.
- To change requirements, click the hyperlinked text Edit job details.
- On the job posting page, click the Job details tab to edit job details.
Add more requirements
Our data shows you're likely to find interested, qualified candidates using these requirements.
The requirements selected by Handshake display in a rectangle card with a light bulb icon.
To add more requirements, click the white button + Add. Once clicked, a sidesheet with additional filters will appear.
You can select from the following filters:

- Tip: search for words on the student profile, e.g. name, major.

Once additional requirements are selected, click the blue button Apply filters in the upper-right corner of the sidesheet. To reset the filters selected, click the white button Reset all.
Any requirements added are displayed in a card above the +Add button. The number in the card(s) represents the number of items selected per requirement.
- To remove any requirement selected, click the X in the card.
To add a segment, toggle the button for 'Apply a segment', then select the segment from the Search segment dropdown.
- For a healthy audience size and engagement, select Recommended.
- For a smaller audience size, select Manual.
- Enter maximum audience size (enter a number lower than our recommended audience size).
When the fields are completed, click the blue button Continue in the lower-right corner of the page.
Step 3: Write message
Campaigns appear as an email and in-app message to students. This is what students will read to decide if they're interested in the job, and will expect your response when they reply.
Subject line
This is the subject line of the email-it should entice students to open it.
Message
Students get a lot of campaigns—the best ones are concise, personalized, and feel like a conversation. Try to use bullet points and avoid jargon.
- Compose your message in the textbox, and format the message as desired.
- To insert the job link in the message, click the hyperlinked text Insert job apply link.
- To use a message template, click the hyperlinked text Use template.
- In the pop-up modal, select a template, then click the blue button Insert.
- To save your message as a template, click the hyperlinked text Save template.
Campaign send date
The message "The job expiration date is DAY OF THE WEEK, MONTH DATE, YEAR TIME (TIMEZONE) displays in a blue banner.
In the dropdown, select either:
- Specific date
- Choose date
Specific date
Click the calendar icon in the Choose date field, select the date, then click the blue button Apply.
From the time dropdown to the right of the date field, choose the time the campaign should be sent.
Ahead of application deadline
Select the number of weeks or days in advance of the application deadline the campaign should be sent.
Add follow-up message (optional)
Automatically follow up with students you sent the campaign to with a short message.
If you want to add a follow-up message, toggle the button for 'Add follow-up message'.
Select which students you want to send a follow-up message to from the Send follow-up to dropdown.
- Students who received the first message
- Students who have not applied to this job
- Students who did not read the first message
Check the box for Exclude students who replied to this campaign and/or Exclude the original job posting attachment if you want to exclude these students or job attachment.
Complete the following fields:
- Follow-up subject line
- Follow-up message
- Follow-up send date
Preview messages
To preview your campaign and/or follow-up message, click the hyperlinked text Preview message.
In the pop-up modal, review your message(s). Click Campaign to view your campaign message, and click Follow-up to view your follow-up message. When finished, click the X in upper-right corner of the modal.
When the fields are completed, click the blue button Continue in the lower-right corner of the page.
Review campaign
Everything look good?
Review the campaign.
- To edit the campaign, click the white button Back.
- To preview your message, click the hyperlinked text Preview message.
To finalize and schedule the campaign, click the blue button Schedule campaign in the lower-right corner of the message.
