Mail Merge Fields

Jade Pathe -

In order to successfully automatically fill in text fields with students’ or contacts' information to create a more personalized mass email, use the appropriate tags to pull differing student information from the backend.

For example, if there are 30 students or contacts on a mass email, and you want the email to start off with “Hello [first name]” such that the [first name] portion of the email autofills for each recipient, you must use the exact text written below.

Variable you are including in email

Exact text to copy into your email

Recipient’s username

%recipient.username%

Recipient’s full name

%recipient.name%

Recipient’s first name

%recipient.first_name%

Recipient’s calculated first name

%recipient.calculated_first_name%

Recipient’s last name

%recipient.last_name%

Recipient’s email address

%recipient.email_address%

Recipient’s Institution

%recipient.institution_name%

If a student or a contact has not filled out a certain field of information, we will default to the following text:

Variable you are including in email

Default text

Recipient’s full name

There (example: “Hi there”)

Recipient’s first name

there

Recipient’s calculated first name

there

Recipient’s email address

your email address

Recipient’s Institution

your institution

This new feature will allow you to create emails that seem specifically tailored to students or contacts and add that extra touch of personalization that will lead to higher open rates. Ultimately, Handshake wants to enable you to reach your students in ways that are time efficient and effective.
