When using integrated video on Handshake, both the participants and hosts can report any user or message (including the host) for fraudulent behavior, spam, or other inappropriate activity.
Trust and safety issues can be reported on web or mobile. This provides a fast and efficient way for users to report issues, and it will provide key info to us for faster triage and resolution. We’ll also be able to monitor issues across multiple schools or users if needed.
During a group virtual fair session, the session host will receive a notification if a user is reported. The host can then decide whether to remove the participant from the meeting or not. If there was a violation of our Terms of Service (https://joinhandshake.com/tos/) and a student or employer was involved or impacted at your school we will inform you of the incident.
Hosts and participants will have additional controls to ensure a safe experience:
- Hosts and attendees will need to have Handshake accounts to access our integrated video platform. Users participating in a career fair will also need to be on the registration /attendee list. If a user does not meet these requirements, they will not have access to the fair, session, or meeting.
- Participants and hosts can both turn their video on/off during virtual sessions in Handshake. If a participant chooses to leave a session at any point, they can do so. If a host chooses to end the session, they have the option to do so. Once the host as ended the session/meeting and the scheduled start time has passed, the session/meeting cannot be re-started.
- Neither the participants or hosts can edit other users names in sessions.
- Hosts can mute or remove participants from a session and once removed they can’t rejoin.
- Group and 1:1 sessions will be encrypted via DTLS/SRTP protocol.

Additional context on fraud and harassment
The term “fraudulent employer” can take on many different meanings. Sometimes, it means that the company was made-up and has no legitimacy. Other times, the company is real and the Handshake user is pretending to be affiliated with a legitimate organization.
Fraud can include a fake or impersonating employer posting scammy jobs or messages to collect more sensitive information or money. Spam can include irrelevant or incessant content, and harassment can include inappropriate content shared or activity that abuses, offends, or harms others.
