If you encounter an error that says "You do not have permission to do that", this indicates you do not have the necessary permission to access the particular page or complete the task in Handshake.
While the error and the root cause is the same across all user types, the implications or necessary steps to resolve the error vary, depending on the user type and circumstances. Refer to the Additional Resources links at the bottom of this article for employer and student facing articles.
The most common situations for our EDU partners (Career Services users) are detailed below.
Switching Users
For our EDU partners, you'll likely encounter this error more frequently if you are switching users (to employer, student, back to Career Services). This is because each user type has unique permissions for certain pages in Handshake, and when you switch to a different account type, that other type doesn't have access to view the page you were on.
For example, if you are in your Career Services account and viewing your user settings, then switch to either your employer or student account, you'll encounter that error, because your Career Services user settings are only accessible by your Career Services account.
Designated Role Missing
With customised staff permissions / roles per Career Services account, this error will appear if you use a link to a page that's gated on a permission you don't have.
For example, if you receive a link to a custom report, but you do not have the roles Analytics: Access and Manage, this error will appear.
If you experience this error as a result of a link that was sent to you, please contact your team's Handshake administrator to request an update to your roles / permissions.
For more information, refer to Institution Settings: Career Services Staff Roles and Permissions.
