When a student submits an Experience in Handshake, Handshake sends several standard notification emails to keep everyone informed.
This article outlines the standard Experience-related emails sent to:
- Students
- Reviewers (approvers and evaluators)
- Career Services staff
All emails listed here use the sender address handshake@notifications.joinhandshake.com unless otherwise noted.
Students
Experience Request Confirmation
- When it’s sent: When a student requests an Experience, or when Career Services creates an Experience on behalf of a student and leaves the status as Pending.
- Subject: Your experience request for [COMPANY NAME]

Content (summary):
- Confirms that the Experience request was received.
- Indicates that the Experience is pending approval and the student will receive another notification after review.
- Includes the Experience name or term.
Note: The content of this confirmation email is not customizable in the Experience Template. Custom student messages exist only for approved/declined notifications
Comments on Experiences
- When it’s sent: When a Career Services staff member adds a comment on the student’s Experience.
- Subject: You have a new notification on Handshake
- Content (summary): Lets the student know a new comment was added on their Experience. Includes a link that directs them to sign in and review the Experience.
Experience Approved
- When it’s sent: When the reviewer approves the Experience
- Subject: Your experience request for [COMPANY NAME]
- Content (summary): Lets the student know their Experience request was approved. Includes a link that directs them to the Experience in Handshake.
Reviewers
Reviewers (also referred to as Approvers) are contacts involved in reviewing or evaluating an Experience. They may or may not have Handshake accounts; they can complete approvals and evaluations directly from email links.
Experience Approval Request

- When Career Services staff start approvals on an Experience,
- When approvals are restarted, or
- When an approval request is re-sent manually from the Experience.
- Subject: Experience requested by [STUDENT NAME]

Content (summary):
- Provides Experience details and any approval survey questions configured in your template.
- Contains a unique link that lets the reviewer approve or decline the Experience and add optional comments.
Experience Mid-term or Final Evaluation Request (and reminders)
- When it’s sent: When a mid-term or final evaluation request is triggered based on template settings or sent manually, and when reminder emails for those evaluations are sent, if reminders are configured.
- Subject (example): Experience evaluation for [STUDENT NAME]
- Content (summary): Links the reviewer to the evaluation form for the specific Experience. Includes any custom evaluation survey questions you have associated with the reviewer in your template.
Career Services
Experience is Fully Approved

- When an Experience’s status is set to Approved manually by Career Services or
- When all reviewers in the approval chain have approved the Experience.
- Subject: Experience fully Approved
- Content (summary): Confirms that the Experience has completed the approval process.
