If you experience internet connectivity issues during an event or career fair while trying to check in attendees, being prepared with offline tools can ensure the check-in process runs smoothly.
Below are solutions and troubleshooting tips to help you manage check-ins effectively, even when the WiFi connection is weak or unavailable.
Note: All features listed below are only available to employers with the Events module. For more information about the Events module, contact your Handshake account manager.
1. Share your QR code with students
To facilitate offline check-ins, sharing a QR code allows students to easily check in using their Handshake app, ensuring a seamless process even without an internet connection.
- Print your QR code before the event or save it to your device.
- During the event, allow students to scan the QR code and check in via their Handshake student app.
- Note: Students must already be logged into the Handshake app.

2. Use the check-in kiosk
To streamline offline check-ins, the check-in kiosk feature allows attendees to enter their information directly without an internet connection.
- Before the event: Open the check-in kiosk on your desktop app when you have an internet connection.
- During the event: Students can enter their email address directly into the kiosk while offline.
For instructions on setting up a check-in kiosk, refer to Creating a Check-in Kiosk.
3. Use the Handshake Events App
The Handshake Events app is a powerful tool for managing check-ins and evaluations, even without internet access.
It allows you to seamlessly track attendees and update event data while in offline mode, syncing changes once your device reconnects.
Get started:
Download or open the Handshake Events app from the Apple App Store
Log in to your employer account while connected to the internet
From the Your Events section, select the relevant event or fair
On the event overview page, tap View Students
Manually add or find a student:
Tap the search icon (magnifying glass) in the upper-right corner
Enter the student’s name or email in the search bar
If the student doesn’t appear, tap Add New Student
Enter their first name, last name, and email in the pop-up window to create a record
Offline mode must be enabled by launching the kiosk while connected to the internet. Once launched, the app will continue to function offline.
