This resource highlights notable updates and changes to the First Destination Survey tool in Handshake that have been released. Each time a substantial update is launched, we'll provide a summary and note the timeframe of the update.
Spring 2020
Below are the changes to FDS in Spring 2020 - click on the link to jump to that section within the article.
- Optional Reminder Emails
- Optional Salary
- Skip logic based on profile data
- General link that doesn’t require login to submit response
- Career services submission form
Optional Reminder Emails
This change introduces the ability to select between three possible email configurations for your FDS:
- Send reminder emails and include Handshake content
- Disable Handshake Content from reminder emails
- Do not send any automated emails to recipients for the FDS
If you would like to send reminder emails with custom content, you should check the "Disable Handshake Email Content"
If you would like to completely disable automated invitation and reminder emails, you should uncheck the box for "Send Recipient Emails" in the Survey Details tab.
Optional Salary
If you would like students to be able to submit their response without requiring salary information, you should uncheck the box for "Salary Information Required" on the Survey Details tab.
Skip logic based on profile data
When creating a new survey, you'll be able to choose the audience for specific pages based on profile data: Courses and/or Institutions.
To add an audience, put a check next to Audience, then select a Course Group or Institution from the dropdown, or begin typing to filter results. The choices you can select from are mapped in your Institution Settings in the Course Groups section and Colleges section.
Please note: Only course groups that have courses mapped to them at your institution will display in the dropdown menu. If you are missing a course group, we'd recommend to double-check that you have at least one course mapped to the group.
General survey link that doesn't require login for response submission
We've added a new link to the Details page that allows students to complete the FDS while logged out, as long as they have been added to the FDS. In order to complete the FDS via this link, students will need to have an account in Handshake, however, they do not have to be activated in order to complete the survey.
This link will not be provided automatically; students will need to have the link shared with them.
Career services submission form
Knowledge Responses are now a simple form to fill out, unique to the Career Services user view. This allows you to quickly input the student data (with no custom questions required!).
The fields to be filled out are:
- Primary Program of Study

Spring 2019

- Targeted Email FDS Handshake Content
- Add Work Experience to Profile
- Make Profile Public
Targeted Email FDS Handshake Content
Career Services users now have the option to send emails to FDS recipients with links to the survey that will not require a login.
- Navigate to First Destination Recipients page
- Select the students you would like to email
- Select "Send Email to Surveyees"
- Review your survey reminder email
- If you remove the Take Survey link then you can re-add it by using the First Destination Survey Handshake Content option.
**Please note that you will not be able to access First Destination Survey as Handshake Content by any other Targeted Email composition method - choosing students from the FDS Recipients page is the only method that allows for this content!
In addition, if you choose to send a test email, please be aware that the "Take Survey" button will not load the FDS for you, as it will not contain the token for FDS recipients. When the email is sent to the surveyees, the "Take Survey" button will include a unique token that will load FDS for the email recipient.
Add Work Experience to Profile
When a student completes the First Destination Survey while logged into Handshake with a Working, Volunteering or Fellowship response, we will add it to their profile.
Make Profile Public
When a student with a private profile completes the First Destination Survey while logged into Handshake we will recommend that they make their profile public to employers so they are discoverable!
Separate Final Reminder emails for "Still Seeking" and "Unsubmitted" students
- To make sure that final reminder emails are relevant to students based on their response, we have separated the final reminder content for Still Seeking and Unsubmitted students.

Work Authorisation Update:
- We just officially removed a question related to work authorisation from the survey. It will not be included in any surveys created in the future and for anyone filling out an existing survey from today onward. Any legacy data from this question will still be available for reporting purposes. This question was previously optional for respondents to answer but there was strong support from institutions for not including it at all - we appreciate everyone’s feedback!
