Handshake’s messaging dashboard gives you a more comprehensive picture of how employers are engaging with your students. Identify which employers are sending the most messages and which employers your students are most interested in connecting with.
To navigate to this dashboard:
1. Click Analytics from the left navigation bar
2. Click Dashboards from the tabs at the upper-left of the page
3. Click Employer Messaging from the tile selections
The reports included in this dashboard, along with the fields that you can filter on and additional information from the dashboard, are listed below.
Filters:
- Message Created Date = date the message was sent from employer
- Industry = the industry selected by the employer
- Student Course Group = course group(s) that the student course(s) are mapped to in Handshake

Open and Click Rates
The Open Rate refers to the percentage of messages opened by students of all the messages set.
- High: Over 60%
- Medium: Between 30% and 60%
- Low: Below 30%
The Click Rate refers to the percentage of messages, once opened, that were clicked on by students, of all the messages set.
- High: Over 6%
- Medium: Between 3% and 6%
- Low: Below 3%
Industry Benchmarks: Open Rate (21%) and Click Rate (2.5%) for ‘Recruitment and Staffing’ via Mailchimp. Handshake assumes a significantly higher click and open rates in employer-student messaging than benchmarks, and may take corrective action against employers with “low” open rates in line with industry averages. Messaging Engagement Requirements

To ensure a positive student experience, Handshake requires employers that exceed 50,000 messages per 6-month recruiting season to maintain acceptable engagement levels. Through 12/31/2021, if a 3% click rate is not met across all messages sent by an employer, Handshake will intervene with corrective action.

Handshake will review employers whose messages are highly concentrated at one specific institution.

Unsolicited campaigns are maxed out for an employer at 1 per type per student per month. For example, an employer could send 1 job campaign, 1 event campaign, and 1 personal follow-up in a month, but may not send 2 job campaigns to the same student. This limit does not apply to reminders, which are considered part of each campaign. This limit does also not apply to students who have opted-in to a specific employer, for example by applying for a job.

Handshake will review any employer who is flagged excessively, has a large number of ‘Not Interested’ opt-outs or identified as problematic by a specific institution or Handshake support team.

For part time jobs, the following requirements apply. Roles must be posted in Handshake as “Part Time” job type, and must be approved at each institution in order to send campaigns to students at that institution. Campaigns will be delivered to those students who have selected “Part Time” work as a preference in their profile.

Campaigns are intended for the promotion of Jobs, Events, Fairs, Advocates to relevant students, and must relate to a legitimate employment opportunity. Any campaign for purposes beyond this requires approval from Handshake. Examples of campaigns requiring approval include surveys, promotion of social media accounts, and networking opportunities not related to recruiting.
Additional Information
Student Experience
- Only activated students who agree to Handshake’s Terms of Service receive messages are able to be messaged by employers.
- Students are able to indicate that they are “not interested” in messages sent from companies and will not receive further messages for that message exchange. Students may still receive other messages from that employer in the future.
Trust and Safety
- Students are able also able to mark messages from employers as spam. Handshake reviews every spam notification and takes appropriate action. Read more here about Handshake’s Spam and Harassment Policy.
