If you experience internet connectivity issues during an event or career fair, offline check-in tools can keep the process running smoothly.
This article outlines three options for managing attendee check-ins when WiFi is slow, unreliable, or unavailable.
Option 1: Share your QR code with students
Sharing a QR code (available with the Events module) allows students to check in using the Handshake app, without requiring an internet connection on your end.
- Print your QR code or save it to your device before the event.
- During the event, direct students to scan the QR code using their Handshake student app.
Note: Students must be logged into the Handshake app before scanning the QR code.
For instructions on downloading your QR code, refer to Download an Event or Fair Booth QR Code.
Option 2: Use the check-in kiosk
The check-in kiosk (available with the Events module) allows attendees enter their information directly on your device, even without an internet connection.
- Before the event, open the check-in kiosk on your desktop app while connected to the internet.
- During the event, students can enter their email address directly into the kiosk while offline.
For instructions on setting up a check-in kiosk, refer to Creating a Check-in Kiosk.
Option 3: Use the Handshake Events app
The Handshake Events app (available with the Events module) supports offline check-ins and syncs attendee data once your device reconnects to the internet.
Before the event:
- Download or open the Handshake Events app from the Apple App Store.
- Log in to your employer account while connected to the internet.
- From the Your Events section, select the relevant event or fair.
- On the event overview page, tap View Students.
During the event (to manually add or find a student):
- Tap the search icon in the upper-right corner.
- Enter the student's name or email in the search bar.
- If the student does not appear, tap Add New Student.
- Enter their first name, last name, and email in the modal to create a record.
Note: Offline mode activates when you launch the kiosk while connected to the internet. Once launched, the app continues to function offline.
Tip: If WiFi is unstable during the event, turn on airplane mode on your device so the Events app does not keep trying to reconnect and you maintain a consistent offline experience.
