Career services notification preferences
Career services users receive appointment-related notifications based on their individual notification preferences. For supported activities, users can choose to receive:
- In-app notifications in Handshake
- Email notifications sent to the email address associated with their Handshake account
- Both, when those options are available for the activity
Career services users can review and update their notification settings in Handshake. To learn more about this, refer to Career Services User Settings: Manage Your Notifications.
Student Notifications

Pre-appointment surveys
If a custom pre-appointment survey is attached to the appointment type, students are prompted to complete the survey while they schedule the appointment, within the booking flow.
Post-appointment surveys
If a post-appointment survey is configured for the appointment:
- A post-appointment survey notification is generated after the career coach selects Complete on the appointment.
- If the appointment is edited and the status is changed to Completed only by using the status radio button, the post-appointment survey notification is not generated.
Drop-in appointment notifications
Career services users receive notifications for drop-in appointments when:
- They have the waiting room page open (we recommend this in another browser tab or window), and
- They have the following notification preference enabled in their user settings:
- “When I am viewing the waiting room page, notify me when a student checks in for a drop-in appointment”
Students do not receive additional notifications when they check in to a drop-in appointment using a kiosk.
Reducing or bypassing student notifications
Updates to an existing appointment, including past appointments, can generate new notifications for attendees.
If an appointment needs to appear on a calendar without creating new notifications for students:
- Create the appointment as a past appointment.
- Set the appointment status to Completed when you create it.
