Submit an Experience (as a Student)

An Experience in Handshake is a way to submit an internship for approval. Depending on your school, these may be for credit-bearing internships only.

Once you submit an Experience, you can manage it through Handshake and create learning objectives to track your progress.

💡Note: some schools may have certain qualifications or permissions associated with experience requests in Handshake. If you do not have these qualifications or permissions, you won't have access to the Experiences section, and will not be able to submit an experience. 

 

Submit an Experience

1. Click Career Center on the left navigation menu, then click Experiences.

🚀Tip: if you don't have access to the Experiences section in Handshake, and you believe you should, we recommend connecting with your Career Services department to check your qualifications and permissions. To find your career centers contact information, refer to How to Locate your School’s Contact Information in Handshake.

2. Click on the tab Submit an Experience, located in the upper-left corner of the page, or click the blue button Submit an Experience.

3. Select your Experience Details by choosing the Experience Type and Term from the dropdown options. Both of these fields are required.

💡Note: each school creates their own set of Experience Types and Terms. 

🚀Tip: if you aren't sure which ones to select, we recommend connecting with your Career Center. To find your career centers contact information, refer to How to Locate your School’s Contact Information in Handshake.

4. Enter the Organization information:

  • Organization (required)
    • This may be an employer, institution, or program
  • Location
  • Industry
  • Phone Number
  • Email Address
💡Note: the Phone Number and Email Address are optional and should be for the organization, not for your individual supervisor.

5. Enter the Experience information:

  • Experience (required)
    • This may be a specific job, internship, or other learning opportunity.
  • Department
  • Date (yyyy-mm-dd)
    • Start and End
  • Experience Type
  • Employment Type
  • Salary
  • Offer Date
  • Offer Accepted
    • Yes
    • No
    • Undecided
  • Add experience to profile? 
    • Check the box to add to your Handshake profile

6. Enter your Supervisors contact information:

  • Email Address (required)

7. Answer the custom questions set by your school (if available). 

 

8. Click the green button Submit an experience in the lower-right corner of the page to complete the Experience request process.

Once requested, you'll be directed to the Experiences Overview page. You'll also receive an email to your inbox confirming the request.

Missing the Career Center option on the left navigation bar? 

If you don't have Career Center as an option on the left navigation bar, it means your school doesn't currently partner with Handshake (yet!)
