Creating a "skip logic" survey allows you to direct respondents to the appropriate questions based on their previous answers, making the user experience better.
Get insight into students' interests and preferences after graduation by creating a "skip logic" survey in Handshake and attaching it to your FDS!
Tip: we recommend planning your survey questions and responses beforehand to make the process easier. For example, if you plan to ask "What are you primarily doing after graduation?", you'll need to plan the options you'd like students to choose from. From there, you can create additional questions based on their responses.
Once you have your survey planned, you'll need to create a survey in Handshake's survey section, then attach the survey to the corresponding FDS.
Create a new survey
To create your own survey, refer to Creating and Testing Surveys for outlined instructions.
To use the First Destination Template in Handshake, follow the steps below.
1. Click Surveys on the left navigation bar, then click New Survey From Template.
2. Click First Destination Survey Additional Questions from the list.
3. On the Setup tab, enter the survey setup details:
- Title - enter the title, which will be displayed to survey recipients
- Description - provide a description as desired

Required for Students? - check this box if this survey is required for students. If marked, this will display a message under the student's survey section in Handshake. Please refer to How to Take a Survey in Handshake for the student's perspective of this message.
- Tip: don't check this box if this is a survey you plan to attach to a form or appointment
- Available to employers? - check this box if you'd like employers to find and take this survey

Completion Label - if selected, the label will be applied to any users who complete this survey
- Tip: if you plan to use a completion label, but the desired label has not been created, open your Institution Settings in a new tab or window (via right click, open in new tab/window), and create the label. When you come back to the survey creation, the new label should be listed in the dropdown.

When you're ready to proceed, click the blue button Next in the bottom-middle of the screen.
4. On the Pages tab, all working options for students to choose from are listed:
- Working
- Volunteering
- Continuing Education
- Still Looking
- Not Seeking
Note: once a student chooses a response from the list, they'll be directed to additional questions that build on their response. These questions are created on the next step.
To edit a response, click Edit to the right of the option.
To add a response, click the blue button Add Page, located in the lower-left corner of the page.
To rearrange the order, click on the page and drag it to the desired location.
When you're ready to proceed, click the blue button Next in the bottom-middle of the screen.
5. On the Questions tab, all questions for each of the responses will be displayed. Use the left menu to review questions for each response option.
To edit a question, click Edit to the right of the question.
To delete a question, click Edit to the right of the question, then click the red button Delete.
To add a question, click the blue button Add Question, located in the lower-left corner of the page.
When you're ready to proceed, click the blue button Next in the bottom-middle of the screen.
6. On the Review tab, confirm that all the information on the survey is correct and ready to go! If so, click the blue button Save Changes in the lower-left corner of the page, then click the green button Create.
Note: surveys cannot be edited after responses have been submitted. Please make sure this survey is finalised before sending to students or employers.
Tip: if you test the survey, do not submit your response.
Attach the survey to your FDS
Open the First Destination Survey you'd like to attach your skip logic survey to, then click the Survey Setup tab.
Review the information for the FDS, then click the blue button Next.
Scroll towards the bottom of the Details page and locate the Custom Questions section. Click the dropdown to choose the corresponding survey.
Once the survey has been added click the blue button next in the lower-right corner of the page and proceed with the survey FDS setup. Your custom survey questions will be added to your FDS!
