Resource categories are used to group certain resources together. Grouping the resources together into a category allows ease of access for yourself, your students, and your fellow staff members! We offer a lot of customisation options for resource categories, this article will go into more detail about these options.

To access the Resource Library in Handshake, click Resources under the Communicate Category in the left navigation panel.
How to Create a Resource Category
- Click on the Categories tab or select Create Category at the upper-left of the page.
- (optional) If you clicked the Categories tab, and this is the first time your institution has created a resource category, you can click the blue button Create Category to make your first category.
- The Add title and description page:
- Title: (required) Create a title for this category. This is required before proceeding to the next page.
- Description: Describe this category for ease of access for your students and institution staff.
- The Add Resources page:

Filters:
- All states: This filter refers to whether the resource is published or in draft. Clicking this filter allows you to narrow the list of resources on this page to Drafts and Published.
- All authors: At default, this filter will provide resources published by any of your institution staff. Clicking the filter allows you to narrow the list of resources on this page to a specific staff member.
- Use the box on the upper-left of the list or by each individual resource to select which resources you’d like to add to this category.
- Once you’ve select your resources, click the blue button Create New Category in the bottom right of the screen to proceed with creating the category.
Note: You don’t need to add resources to the category, you can just proceed with creating the category without selecting any resources.
After you’ve created the category, you will be taken to Resource Library Category tab. Here you can manage the different resource categories, which we will explain in the next section.
Managing resource categories on the Resource Library page
- On the Resource Library Category tab, you can click the ellipsis listed on any of the Resource Category titles to access the options available to manage that category:
- Move to first position: Arranges the category to be listed before all other categories.
- Move one position up: Arranges the category one space up on the category list.
- Move one position down: Arranges the category one space down on the category list.
- Move to last position: Arranges the category to be listed after all other categories.
Note: Any of the options to move the category influences the order of categories in the staff and student view!
- Edit category: Redirects you to the title and description page to make edits to this category.
- Get shareable link: Automatically copies a link to the category that can be provided to students or other staff members.
Managing individual resource categories
Select any category that you’ve already created to make changes to that category.
You can select the ellipsis in the top centre-right of the page to edit or delete the overall category.
Click the Share button to copy a link to share the category with students or staff members.
Click the Add existing resources button in the upper-right corner of the page to pull up a list of existing resources that you can add to this category.
Select the ellipsis on the right of an individual resource to choose from the following options:
- Edit resource: Redirects you to the resource editing page. Learn more about editing resources here: Add or Edit a Resource in the Resource Library
- Get sharable link: Instantly copy a link that you can share with students or staff members for this individual resource.
- Remove from category: Instantly removes the resource from this category.
- Delete resource: Deletes the resource from Handshake.
