Following an employer in Handshake has many benefits as it provides notifications to you when key activities occur that you may be interested in. This includes when a new job is posted to your school, the employer is hosting an event, or the employer is attending a fair at your school
Note: some of our Premium employer partners can view which students have followed their company profile, and they can use this information for more specific outreach.
Click on the expandable headers to learn more about how to follow an employer in Handshake, and the notifications details you'll receive.
How to follow an employer
Handshake offers multiple opportunities to follow an employer throughout the product. The Follow button can be located:
- on the employer's company page
- job postings page
- the sessions tab for a virtual fair
- after attending a virtual event or career fair session in Handshake
- after checking into an employers booth at an in-person event or career fair via QR code
Employers company page
When viewing an employers company page, click the Follow button, located in the upper-right corner of the page below the banner.
Job Posting
When viewing a job post, scroll to the middle of the page and locate the "About [Company Name]" section, then click the Follow button.
Sessions tab for a virtual fair
When viewing the Available Sessions tab for a virtual fair in Handshake, you can search for an employer name in the search bar. If that employer is approved at your school and has an approved registration at the fair but doesn't have any available sessions, a message will load that says "COMPANY NAME doesn't have any available sessions. This could mean they haven't set up their schedule yet, or all sessions you qualify for are filled."
Below the message is a prompt for "Get notified when sessions are added" - Click the Follow button to begin following the employer. If their schedule hasn't been set yet, you'll receive a notification when it's created.
After a virtual event or session
If the video session is hosted using video via Handshake, you'll be able to follow the employer immediately afterwards! A pop-up will appear with additional steps to take with the employer, including the option to follow them in Handshake. Click the Follow button, located in the upper-right corner of the pop-up.
After checking in via QR code
After scanning the QR code to check into an employer booth at a career fair, and completing the checkin process, the employer's company profile will load — click the Follow button to follow the employer.
