This article highlights how you can proactively approve an Employer on Handshake - and notify them so that they can post opportunities for your students!
Please note: If you're proactively approving, Handshake does not send a notification to the company (unless you accompany that with an email to the public POC or a comment on the approval). When schools connect with employers this way, the employer will not be notified when they are approved. Check out the process for notifying at the bottom of this article.
Proactively Approving Employers
- Start by selecting Employers on the left navigation bar. You should be taken to the Employers screen. In the upper-left corner, click on the Find Employer tab.
- This page provides a A-Z list of all employers on Handshake, as well as indicating whether or not the company is public or private, and if your school has connected with them yet. You can search for the name of the employer using the search bar in the left panel, as well as filtering using a variety of different criteria such as location, size and type of industry. Locate the employer you would like to connect with and click on their name to continue.
For more information on the Employer page, please refer to Employer Page Overview. - Once you search for an employer's company name, you can see whether or not your company has already approved the employer by identifying the green text Approved on the far right side of the page.
- If the employer is not approved, you can click to navigate to their page. If wanted, click the Approve employer button on the lower-right of the screen.
Note: As schools are not automatically notified when you proactively approve them, we advise that you add a comment on the Employer Approval modal whilst in the process of approving:
- From here, you are also able to choose what roles to assign the employer, and assign them to a particular staff member within your school. Once you have chosen the employer’s desired roles, click the green button Save Approved, or Save Approved & View Next and you'll be directed to another employer you have not yet connected with.
Comment Example
Below is a template comment which you might like to leave for the employer whilst approving:
Hi there!
{Insert school name} is excited to join the Handshake network - we look forward to connecting with you with our top talent! We value your campus partnership, and have provisioned your company with the following roles:
- {default approval roles here}
Please keep the following guidelines in mind as you engage with {insert school name} students and alumni {insert posting guidelines here}

Optional: Add a label
You might want to add a label to the employer account - as a way to track which employers you've pre-approved. This also enables you to follow up with them later.
If you wish to add a label, select the Manage button on the Labels section of the specific employer's page.
Utilize the side sheet to add your label of choice to establish that this employer has been pre-approved. You can also select Create new label in the bottom right corner of the side sheet to create a new label.
