Depending on the interview type associated with the schedule, applicants will have different opportunities to reserve their interview slot time in Handshake.
Once a student reserves an interview slot, they have the option to swap or leave the slot completely.

Taking a slot
The interview schedule type plays a crucial role on when a student can take an interview slot in Handshake. The time frame in which a student can reserve their slot is describer per each type.
For more information on the available interview types in Handshake, refer to Interview Schedule Types.
Students will not be able to reserve their slots in Handshake with this type. The employer will manage the interviews outside of Handshake.
Qualified students will have the option to reserve their spot immediately after applying to the job.
If a student doesn't meet the qualifications, their application will go into "Pending" status. The student will need to be selected and marked as "Primary" to take a slot.
Note: if a qualified applicant is added by a career services user, the student will go into "Pending" status.
All applicants will go into "Pending" status regardless of their qualifications.
Students will need to be selected as "Primary" or "Alternate" before reserving an interview slot. Candidates can take their slots between the:
- Primary: 'primary sign up start' and 'signup end' date.
- Alternate: 'alternate sign up start' and 'sign up end' date.
Students not marked as a "Primary" or "Alternate" will not be able to take a slot and will automatically be marked as declined.

Leaving a slot
Depending on the interview type, students can leave a slot up until the:
- Apply end date for an Open schedule.
- Signup end date for a Preselect schedule.
