General conditions for withdrawing an application
To withdraw an application in Handshake, the following must be true:
- The job posting must still be active and not expired
- Your application status cannot be marked as "declined."
Application Submitted Externally
If you clicked Apply Externally on a job posting, you were redirected to the employer's application site (e.g., their own website or an external platform). Once you apply externally, Handshake will update the job posting with a prompt that asks, "Did you apply for this job?"
- Clicking No will withdraw your application from Handshake altogether.
- Clicking Yes will change the text to "You applied on [DATE]".
Withdrawing your application in Handshake won’t affect your external application. The employer is the only one who can withdraw your application from their site.
If you need help removing your application from Handshake, we recommend reaching out to your school's Career Center. Provide them with the job title and a direct link to the job. The Career Services team will be able to determine the employer's application preferences, and they may be able to remove your application record in Handshake directly. Otherwise, they may suggest you contact the employer to withdraw your application.
Application submitted through Greenhouse Integration
Some employers use Greenhouse to manage their applications. When applying for a job posted via Greenhouse, you will receive a prompt before the Submit Application button that says:
"Employer is using Greenhouse to track applications. To withdraw this application after submission, you will need to contact Employer."
Applications submitted through Greenhouse cannot be withdrawn in Handshake. Only the employer can withdraw your application directly from Greenhouse. If you need to withdraw a Greenhouse application, contact the employer directly.
Application submitted in Handshake
If you applied directly in Handshake (without applying externally or via Greenhouse), you can withdraw your application as long as its status is still "Pending" review. Once the employer has reviewed your application, you will need to contact your Career Center to request a withdrawal.
1. Click your account icon in the upper-right corner of Handshake, then click on My Jobs.
2. From the list that appears, locate the job you want to remove your application for, then click on the job title.
Tip: use the filters on the left of the page to narrow down the displayed list.
3. On the job overview page, click Withdraw Application.
In the popup that appears, confirm you'd like to withdraw your application from the job and any associated interview schedules by clicking the red button Withdraw.
Application attached to an Interview Schedule in Handshake
If your application is linked to an interview schedule in Handshake (e.g., for an on-campus interview), you can still withdraw your application as long as it's in the "Pending" review stage. Once the employer has reviewed your application, contact your Career Center to withdraw.
To remove your application from an interview schedule:
1. Click your icon, located in the upper-right corner of the page, then click My meetings from the dropdown.
2. In the upper-left of the page that loads, click the On-Campus Interviews tab.
3. Locate the relevant interview schedule, then click on it to remove your application.
If the employer re-opens a job that was previously posted on Handshake, and you were declined at that time, you’ll need to connect with your school's career center to help withdraw your application so that you can re-apply.
To find your school's contact information, refer to How to Locate your School’s Contact Information in Handshake.
To re-apply to a job after withdrawing an application, you may do so at any time as long as the job posting is still active (not expired). For more information on applying for jobs in Handshake, refer to Apply for a Job in Handshake.
