If you've forgotten your account password, or would like to update it, you can do so in just a few steps.
Passwords on Handshake must:
- Contain eight characters or more

Contain characters from two of the following three character classes:
- Alphabetic (e.g., a-z, A-Z)
- Numeric (i.e. 0–9)
- Punctuation and other characters (e.g.,!@#$%^&*()_+|~-=\`{}[]:";'<>?,./)
- Note: Passwords are not encrypted.
To begin, select your current login status to follow the proper steps to reset your password:
Signed in
1. Click on your name in the upper-right corner of any page, then select User settings from the dropdown.
Note: If you're on your profile, click the white Open employer app button in the upper-right corner of the page, and proceed by following the steps starting from Step 1.
2. On the Account Information tab, click the white Change password button located on the center of the page.
3. In the pop-up modal, enter your old password in the Old Password text field, enter your new password in the Password text field, then confirm the new password in the Password confirmation text field.
4. Once the passwords are entered in the fields, click the blue button Change Password.
Note: if you receive the error message "Incorrect existing password, sign out of your account, then follow the steps for Signed out.
5. The page will refresh, and the confirmation message "Password changed successfully" will display in a green banner.
- Additionally, you will receive an email notification to confirm that your password has recently been changed.
The email will read:
From: Handshake <handshake@m.joinhandshake.com
Subject: "Your password has been recently changed"
Body: "Hello [NAME],
We wanted to give you a notice that your password has been recently changed.
You can log in with your new password.
If you did not change your password recently, please contact our support team and they’ll be happy to help you out.

Signed out
1. Navigate to https://app.joinhandshake.com/login.
2. In the field labeled 'Enter email', enter the email associated with your Handshake account, then click the Next button.
3. On the next page, click the white Forgot your password? button.
4. Enter the email once more in the text field provided, then click the Reset Password button.
5. The page will refresh with a confirmation message that reads, "Almost there! Please check your email to set your password."
6. From the email, click the Set My Password link.
7. You will be redirected to Handshake to reset your password. Choose a new password and enter it once in each field, then click the Next button.
8. The page will refresh with a confirmation message that reads "Success. Your password has been successfully changed. Click below to sign in." Click the Sign In link to log in using your new password.
- Additionally, you will receive an email notification to confirm that your password has recently been changed.
Troubleshoot a missing password reset email
If you're not receiving the password reset email, we recommend taking the steps below:
- Check your spam or junk folders. Since this is an automated email, some providers may filter it out of your inbox. If you're using one of the following email clients, refer to the linked resources for additional guidance:
- Search your entire mailbox using the subject line "Password Reset Request". This may help surface the message if it landed in an unexpected folder.
- Add Handshake to your address book. Add "handshake@m.joinhandshake.com" as a trusted sender, then return to Handshake and request the password reset again.
- Check your email subscription status. If you have previously unsubscribed or if there is a delivery issue (known as email suppression), you may not receive the message. If you have completed the steps above and still have not received the email, contact Support.
