If you forgot your password or want to update it, you can reset or change it in just a few steps. This article explains how to update your password while signed in or reset it while signed out.
Note: If your browser has a password saved, use a new or incognito window, or clear your browser cache before resetting your password.
Password requirements
Passwords on Handshake must:
- Contain eight characters or more

To begin, select your current login status to follow the proper steps to reset your password:
Change your password while signed in
1. Click on your name in the upper-right corner of any page, then select User settings from the dropdown.
Note: If you're on your profile, click the Open employer app button in the upper-right corner of the page, then select User settings from your name dropdown.
2. On the Account Information tab, click the Change password button located in the center of the page.
3. In the pop-up, enter your old password in the Old Password text field, enter your new password in the Password text field, then confirm the new password in the Password confirmation text field.
Note: Your new password must be 8+ characters and include a combo of letters, numbers, and special characters.
4. Once the passwords are entered, click the Change Password button.
Note: if you receive the error message "Incorrect existing password, sign out of your account, then follow the steps for Signed out.
5. The page refreshes and a green confirmation banner displays the message "Password changed successfully."
You will also receive an email notification confirming that your password was recently changed. The email reads:
The email reads:
From: Handshake <handshake@m.joinhandshake.com
Subject: "Your password has been recently changed"
Body: "Hello [NAME],
We wanted to give you a notice that your password has been recently changed.
You can log in with your new password.
If you did not change your password recently, please contact our support team and they’ll be happy to help you out.
Thank you,
The Handshake Team"
Reset your password while signed out or if you forgot your password
Note: The current sign-in screen doesn't include a direct link to reset your password. Use the direct reset link below to set a new password, or use a one-time code to access your account without changing your password.
Reset your password directly
1. Go to https://app.joinhandshake.com/password_resets/new.
2. On the Reset password screen, enter your email address in the Email field, then click the Reset password button.
3. A confirmation message displays: "Password reset email sent to [your email address].
4. Check your email and click the password reset link in the message from Handshake.
The email reads:
From: Handshake handshake@m.joinhandshake.com
Body: "Hello [NAME],
We have received your password reset request.
Please click the following link to reset your password: Reset My Password. If you did not request a password reset, please disregard this email.
Thank you, The Handshake Team"
5. On the Reset your password screen, enter your new password in the New password field, confirm it in the Confirm new password field, then click the Reset button.
Note: Your new password must be 8+ characters and include a combo of letters, numbers, and special characters.
6. You are redirected to the login page, and a confirmation message displays: "Successfully reset password." You will also receive an email confirming that your password was recently changed.
Sign in without resetting your password using a one-time code
Note: This option signs you into your account but doesn't set a new password. If you don't remember your current password, use the Reset your password directly steps above instead.
1. Go to https://app.joinhandshake.com/access.
2. On the "Log in or sign up" screen, enter your email address in the Email field, then click the Continue with email button.
3. On the "Welcome to Handshake" screen, click the Send one-time code button. This sends a one-time code to the email address shown on the screen.
- If you enter a password in the Enter password field instead and it doesn't match your account, this message displays: "That email and password combination doesn't match. Try again or use a one-time code instead."
4. Check your email for the one-time code. On the "Enter one-time code" screen, enter the code in the text field, then click the Verify button. If you don't receive the code, click Resend code to request a new one.
Note: The code expires in 30 minutes and can only be used once. If you didn't try to sign in, you can safely ignore the email. Handshake never asks for this code by phone or chat.
5. Once you enter the code and are verified, you will be automatically signed into your account.
Troubleshoot a missing one-time code or password reset email
If you're not receiving the one-time code email, take the steps below:
- Check your spam or junk folders. Since this is an automated email, some providers may filter it out of your inbox.
- Search your entire mailbox using the subject line "Your password has been recently changed" or "Your Handshake one-time code". This may help surface the message if it landed in an unexpected folder.
- Add Handshake to your address book. Add "handshake@m.joinhandshake.com" as a trusted sender, then return to Handshake and request a new code.
- Check your email subscription status. If you previously unsubscribed, or if there's a delivery issue (known as email suppression), you may not receive the message.
