Create a Custom Profile URL on Handshake

One of the best ways to stand out to employers and make your Handshake profile more shareable is by claiming a custom URL for your profile. This personalized link can be added to your résumé, email signature, or social profiles, making it simpler for recruiters and peers to find your professional profile.  

This guide will walk you through how to unlock, set, and manage your custom Handshake URL!

 

What Is a Custom Profile URL?

A custom profile URL is a unique web address that links directly to your Handshake profile (e.g., joinhandshake.com/yourname). You can choose this URL—subject to availability—so it aligns with your personal brand, making it easy to share and access.

 

How to Unlock Your Custom URL

To claim your custom URL, follow these steps:

  1. Complete at least 70% of your Handshake profile
    Fill out key sections such as Education, Work & Volunteer Experience, Skills, and Interests to get closer to profile completion. For more tips, check out Completing your Profile in Handshake.

  2. Have a Community profile with visibility set to Public
    Your profile must be set to "Public" in order for others to view your profile and share your link. Learn more about your profile visibility options in Profile Privacy Options in Handshake. 

Once you meet these requirements, the option to set your custom URL will be available on both the web and mobile versions of Handshake.

 

How to Create Your Custom Profile URL

  1. After reaching 70% profile completion, you’ll receive a notification in-app. You’ll also be prompted with banners guiding you to unlock your custom URL.

    Alternatively, you can click your profile icon in the upper-right corner, then select My Profile from the dropdown. Next, Click the Customize Profile Link button.

  2. In the pop-up that appears, scroll to the “Custom Profile Link” section. Remove the auto-generated URL and enter your desired URL. You'll receive instant feedback if your chosen URL is already taken. Try variations that reflect your personal brand.

    Note: If this option is grayed out and unclickable, it means you're not yet eligible for a custom URL. Complete your profile to unlock this feature.

  3. Once you're happy with your URL, click Save.
     

 

Edit Limits and Restrictions

  • Update Frequency: You can change your custom URL once every 30 days. If you need to update it, wait until the 30-day period has passed.

  • Restricted Words: Certain terms, like the names of the top 500 employers, cannot be used in your URL.

  • Community Guidelines: URLs that violate Handshake’s community guidelines may be reported by other users.

 

Additional Information

  • Once set, your URL is yours to keep, even if you later remove content from your profile or change your profile's privacy setting. Just know, if you change your profile's privacy setting, other will not be able to view your profile through your custom link.

  • Setup banners and notifications only appear if you’re eligible and haven’t already claimed a custom URL. If you dismiss a banner, it will no longer appear in the app. You'll need to claim your custom link within your profile settings. To do this, refer to Update Personal Information on Your Profile.
