Employers without a corporate email domain can register on Handshake using a generic email address, such as @gmail.com or @yahoo.com.
What to expect when using a generic email
When you enter a generic email address, a message appears stating: “It looks like you're using a personal email (@gmail, @yahoo, @hotmail, etc). Please use your work email so we can connect you with your company.” This message is informational only and does not prevent you from continuing the registration process.
Note: To ensure you are properly connected to your company, we recommend registering with your corporate email address. If your company uses a corporate email domain, you will not be able to join an existing company profile using a generic email address.
Next, set and confirm your password. Review Handshake’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then select the checkbox to agree.
If you would like to receive marketing messages, including promotions and special offers from Handshake, select the optional checkbox.
When finished, click the black Create account button in the lower-right corner.
After verifying your email address, continue by completing your profile. Learn How to Create an Employer Account on Handshake.
Trouble joining your company profile
If you attempt to join your organization’s company profile and receive the following error message: “You cannot join a company if you have a generic email domain. Please re-register with your company's email. If you need to use your current email, you can contact support and have them manually add you.”
This means your company profile was created using a corporate email domain, and generic email addresses are not allowed to join it by default. To resolve this, contact Support.
If your company does not yet have a profile, you can create one. Learn more about How to Create a New Company Profile.
If you plan to post job listings for household positions, such as babysitting or caretaking roles, review the guidelines in Posting Personal, Babysitter, Household, or Caretaker Jobs.
