To message students and alumni effectively on Handshake, use a personalized, strategic approach.
Steps to write an effective message
1. Write a strong subject line
The subject line appears in the candidate's email, Handshake inbox, and mobile notification, so it has a major effect on open rates. Include your company name for higher engagement.
The default subject line format, "[Recruiter name] at [Company] has sent you a message on Handshake," performs well. Customizing the subject line with your brand voice can improve open rates further, especially when it includes a clear action word like "apply." Keep subject lines between 80 and 110 characters.
2. Personalize the message
Open with a line that shows why you are reaching out to this specific student, such as referencing their major or a relevant skill. Personalized openers increase response rates. Sign off with a real name rather than a generic company address. Candidates respond better to a message from an individual recruiter than from a company account.
3. Make the call to action clear
Make the call to action stand out using bold text, underline, or color, and hyperlink it directly. Phrases like "Apply to this job" or "RSVP to this event" work well. Include an application deadline or event date to create urgency. Direct candidates to apply through Handshake so their engagement can be tracked.
4. Link to your brand
Link to your Handshake Brand Page or a marketing video in your message so candidates can learn more about your company culture before applying. This gives candidates a reason to research your company further.
