Students can message you in Handshake either by replying to a message you sent them or by initiating contact when certain conditions are met.
How students can message employers
Students can initiate a message to an employer when any of the following apply:
- You have already sent them a message
- You appear in the People section of your company's Brand page
- You hosted a 1:1 session with them
- You were introduced as a teammate in a message
- You are attached to a campaign as a point of contact or Advocate

Note: This feature is available to customers on Essentials and Enterprise plans.
Reduce unexpected messages from students
To limit student-initiated contact for a specific teammate, avoid the following:
- Messaging students
- Hosting a 1:1 session unless direct follow-up is expected
- Introducing a teammate in a message unless they should be contactable
- Attaching a teammate to a campaign as a point of contact or Advocate unless they should receive student outreach
- Leaving the Brand page People section on automatic fill if tighter control over visibility is needed.
