Employers in Handshake are able to access Job Matches, a resource that enables you to discover more candidates that are a match for posted jobs. Handshake Premium partners have access to additional filters and customized segments to view and engage with more candidates.
Matches identifies active student profiles that meet all of the criteria below:
- active at a school the job is currently posted to
- set to public (visible to employers)
- Profiles set to private (hidden from employers) are not included in this list
- education aligns with the selected job preferences on this job or chosen segment
Access Job Matches
Click Jobs from the left navigation bar in Handshake, click on the desired job title, then click the Matches tab.
Core employers can view up to 100 matches per job. Premium partners can view an unlimited number of matches per job.
Job Matches
Matches displays all active, public student profiles from the schools where the job is currently posted and approved.
The center of the page displays Top Matches, which are the most relevant candidates based on the job's selected preferences. Students highlighted in this section are most likely to respond to your outreach.
Note: Top Matches only appear for jobs for which you've specified candidate preferences for (major, graduation date, or school year). You will be prompted to add preferences if your job posting does not already have candidate preferences specified.
The profile card displayed for each Top Match will include the following information:
- Profile photo (only displays if available)
- Name
- College
- Major
- Grad month/year
- Matching interests (only displays if candidate has any relevant job preferences and interests)
Top matches updates daily to display candidates with similar interests that match your job preferences.
Below Top Matches, you will find All Matches, which are candidates that meet all job preferences.
The candidate table includes the following information for each match:
- Name
- Last Engaged (only visible to Premium partners)
- Interests
On the left of the page, Match Criteria provides Premium partners with more information on how matches display.
Click directly on the name of the student to view their profile. For additional details, refer to Viewing Student Profiles.
Add Segment
Segments are only available to Essentials (with the Segment module) and TES partners.

Invite to Apply

To invite a specific student from the Top Matches section, click on the gray button Invite located on their profile card.
To invite All Matches, check the box to the left of Name, then click Invite to apply to the far right of the page. To invite a specific student(s), check the box to the left of the student name(s), then click Invite to Apply.
Note: messaging limits apply when sending a bulk message. For more information, refer to Messaging Limits in Handshake.
Upon clicking the button Invite to apply, the message preview modal will open with a pre-composed message to let the student(s) know why they're a good match for the role.
The pre-composed message reads:
"Hi {first name}
We looked at your profile and think you'd be a great fit for {role} because you match these qualifications:
Area of study: {major}
Class year: {class year}
Graduation: {graduation year}
This position fits your interest in similar roles in {matching interests} near {matching location interest}.
We're looking for students just like you - we hope you'll apply"
If multiple students are selected, the message will be sent to each student separately, and the pre-composed message will be customized according to the student's specific details, e.g., name, qualifications, and matching interests.
The message "We've filtered out all candidates according to your message filter preferences" will appear if your bulk messaging preferences are set to automatically remove students from your message recipient list if:
- They have applied to a job at {COMPANY NAME} in the past 12 months.
- I (you) have sent them a message in the past 12 months.
- Anyone at {COMPANY NAME} has sent them a message in the past 12 months.

If you'd like to send the message as configured, click the green button Send message in the lower-right corner of the modal.

From here, the message compose modal will open. A message may load below the Subject line to indicate how many messages you have left in this hiring season. Click the hyperlinked text Learn more to choose a Handshake plan that fits your hiring needs.
Compose your message, and then click the blue button Preview message to preview your message.
Check out How to write a recruiting message to students (plus 7 templates).
