We've updated our process on archiving students in Handshake. This article will explain how the experience has changed for students and schools. We recommend using archiving sparingly, this will give you the most accurate representation of data in Handshake. It also allows alumni opportunities to continue to use Handshake while connected to your school, giving them more relevant and plentiful job opportunities.

Archive a student account
To archive a student, go to any student's profile and select Account in the upper right corner of the page
Scroll down and check the box for Archive This Profile, then select Update user to save the changes
You can also archive student accounts in bulk: Importer: Bulk Archiving Students
When you archive a student account and they don't attempt to log in again
- The student will remain archived and connected to your school
- You will be able to locate them as an archived student in the Manage students page and their data will appear in the Analytics and FDS modules
When you archive a student account in Handshake and the student attempts to log in again
- The student is disconnected from your school in Handshake
- The student still has access to Handshake as an unaffiliated job seeker
- Upon logging in, the student is asked if they wish to connect to your school again. That option will always be available for them as displayed in the Student article: Connect to Your School for Full Handshake Access
- They will need to be approved by your school before they are reconnected to your school again, similar to the steps in Processing Student & Alumni Connection Requests
- The student's historic data will exist in the Analytics and the FDS module but data for activity after they become unaffiliated will not be available on the Manage students page
Is there a way to prevent a student from using Handshake, but keep them connected to my school?
Since archiving a student account has a modified functionality now, you can prevent the student from temporarily using Handshake if you block their account. Blocking encourages the student to reach out to your school or Handshake Support to identify what they need to do to use Handshake again. To learn more about blocking students, refer to How to Block a Student.
