Handshake allows employers to manage their institution network by requesting access, organising connections, and performing actions such as posting jobs and reviewing past communications.

Permissions to recruit at each institution are managed at the company-to-institution level. This means:
- If you want to recruit from specific institutions, you must either post a job and obtain approval, or request to join their network directly if you don’t have a job to post.
- If an institution declines your job posting, you may post another job to that institution—provided the institution has not declined your company.
- If an institution declines your company, you will not be able to post jobs or participate in other recruiting activities at that institution. You may still post events or register for career fairs, but the institution will not update your connection status.
Manage your connections
To begin, click Institutions from the left navigation bar, then click on each tab as applicable.
Requesting approval
1. Click the More Institutions on Handshake tab. This tab displays a list of all institutions in the Handshake network that you have not yet connected with or are awaiting approval from.
2. To view the institutions where you can request approval, click the white Filters button, then select Available to post job in the Approval Status section.
3. After selecting your desired filters, click the black button Apply in the lower-right corner of the filter sidesheet.
4. The table will update to show only the institutions where you can request approval either by posting a job or by requesting to join their network.
Note: If you have a job to post, you can also select the institution during the job creation process. Once the job is approved, the institution will appear on the Your Employer's Institutions tab on the Institutions page.
5. From the table, select the institution you'd like to request approval from, then click the white button Favourite and request.
Note: Institutions requested will automatically be added to your favourites list.
6. After you submit the request, a banner will appear in the lower-right corner of the page displaying the message "Institution added to favourites. The institution will also receive a request from your employer to join their network."
7. The status of your connection request will update to Pending, and the request will be sent to the institution for review.

Adding institutions to your Favourites
1. Click the Your Employer's Institutions tab. This tab includes all institutions where your company is currently approved to recruit.
2. Navigate to the institution that you want to add to your Favourites, then click the white button Add to favourites to the far right of the institution name.
Removing institutions from your Favourites
Click the Favourites tab, then navigate to the institution(s) that you want to remove from your Favourites.
Note: If you're a Premium partner and want to remove an institution(s) from your Favourites, refer to the section Delete and manage lists in How to Use Institution Lists.
Remove a single institution
1. Click the grey button Remove to the far right of the institution name.
2. In the pop-up modal, confirm the action by clicking the red button Remove.
Remove multiple institutions
1. Check the box to the left of each institution's name.
2. Click the hyperlinked text Remove Selected in the upper-right corner of the table.
3. In the pop-up modal, confirm the action by clicking the red button Remove.
In addition to managing institution connections, you can take other actions on the Institution Network Management page.
These include viewing comments, adding notes, and reviewing comment history. Expand the sections below to learn more about each action.
View and add notes
From any tab on the Institution Network Management page, click on the name of the institution to access their profile and view and add notes.
To view or add a note, click the blue button View & Add notes in the Actions section located to the left of the page.
To begin, enter your note in the Note field provided, then click the blue button Add note.
- To share the note with your staff, click the blue button Share with Staff.
- To keep the note private, and only visible to you, select Personal Note from the Share with Staff dropdown.
Add a comment
To contact Career Services at any institution with a comment, click directly on their profile.
- If you're already connected with the institution, add your comment in the textbox in the sub-section Discussion in the Institution Approval section, then click the blue button Add comment.
- If you're not yet connected, and you have a pending job at an institution, add your comment in the textbox in the sub-section Add comment in the Job History section, then click the blue button Add comment.
The institution will be notified and can reply if they wish. As long as your notifications are enabled, you will receive a notification if they respond. View your Default Notification Preferences (Employers).
View comment history
To view your comment history with a particular institution, click directly on their profile.
