Institution Network Management: Institution Recommendations

On Handshake, Institution Recommendations matches employer jobs with the institutions that have the highest number of candidates who meet the job's location and qualifications criteria.

Access Institution Recommendations

1. Click Jobs from the left navigation bar in Handshake, then select the relevant job. 

2. Click the Institutions tab on the job overview page.

3. The page displays Recommended institutions at the top of the page, and features a blue button Customise recommendations in the upper-right corner of the section.

The section displays an institution card for each recommended institution, and includes the following information:

  • The institution's name and location
  • A count of Qualified candidates, based on your job's candidate qualifications
  • a green button Post job here now

To view additional institution recommendations, up to 25 institutions max, click the hyperlinked text Load more.

  • The message "To get institution recommendations, change your customisations. We’ll need to know what type of students you’re looking for in order to recommend appropriate institutions. Tell us by customising your recommendations." appears in a grey banner at the top of the page if candidate qualifications were not added.
    • To add candidate qualifications, click the blue button Customise recommendations.

Institution Recommendations filters

Employers will be shown institutions that have a significant number of students based on either or any of the following filters related to a job:

  • Location: radius based on institutions within 250 miles of job's primary location
    • Note: if there is more than one location on the job, the first location listed is used. You can change this by customising your recommendations as outlined in Customise recommendations.
    • For Premium partners: if "various locations" is indicated instead, no geo-filter is applied.
  • Candidate qualifications:
    • Level of study
    • Graduation date 
    • Course groups

 

Post job to recommended institutions

Post job (optional) 

This option displays if you have not posted a job to an institution you are not connected with yet.

1. Click the green button Post job here now within the institution card of the institution you want to post the job to.

2. In the pop-up modal, choose the application's open and close date, then click the blue button Post Job.

3. Once the job is posted, the message "Job posted. You'll be able to track approval status below" will appear in a green banner within the institution card. 

  • Track the approval status in the Requested Institutions section in the Institutions tab. 

 

4. The job selected will be automatically sent to the institution for review, and will be in Pending status until the institution makes a decision. Learn more about Understanding Job Posting Approvals.

Note: institutions that have declined to connect will not display in the Recommended institutions section.

Customise recommendations 

Institution recommendations are based on existing job preferences and the primary location by default. 

1. Click Customise recommendations in the upper-right of the Institution Recommendations section to change the applied filters.

2. A sidesheet will open to the right of the page.

All employers can customise recommendations based on preferences and location: 

  • They meet your job's qualifications 
    • Your current preferences are displayed. To edit your current qualifications, click the hyperlinked text "Edit qualifications". 
  • Their institution is near your job location(s)
    • The location(s) selected is listed with the range of 250 miles. Edit the job post to change the location. 
    • If the checkbox is greyed out and disabled, this indicates that the location type is remote. 
    • Note: only Premium partners can select the mile radius for each location. 

*Premium partners can customise recommendations based on students' selected interests: 

  • They want to work near your job's location 
    • Choose from a radius of 5, 15, 30, 50, 75, 100, and 250 miles.
    • For postings with multiple locations, students who have chosen one of the locations as an interest are counted as a match.
  • They're interested in roles like this one  
  • They're interested in your industry
