If your estimated audience size is different from your actual audience size, or if there are no recipients, this is likely due to how the campaign is configured, or the default exclusions that apply to all campaign types.
Explore Campaigns: Exclusions.
Default exclusions
There is an automated 48-hour exclusion in place to safeguard multi-sends on the same day for any initial and follow-up campaigns. This excludes recipients who received a message from the campaign creator.
In addition to the automated 48-hour exclusion, recipients who are not seeking job opportunities are automatically excluded.
Campaign targeting
To better target qualified students, we remove students from your segment that are very unlikely to engage with your campaign, which can result in a lower audience size.
Estimated audience size
The estimated audience size is an estimate of the number of students a particular campaign can reach. It is based on the assumption that the job, event, or career fair will be approved at all the schools it was requested at. Then, it estimates how many students from those schools meet the segment criteria.
However, the total count of recipients may vary at the time the campaign is sent. It is dependent upon Handshake's default exclusions, the optional exclusions set in place by the employer, and the status of the job, event or career fair promoted.
The audience size displayed on the campaign overview page will reflect the total count of recipients reached.
Troubleshooting
Below, we highlight common reasons that can cause a low audience and solutions you can apply.
Low or no estimated audience
There are various reasons the estimated audience is 0 or lower than expected.
Reasons include, but are not limited to:
- The job, event or fair registration was not approved at all the schools it was posted to at the time the campaign was created.
- Exclusions are set in place (exclusions apply regardless of campaign type)
- Automated 48-hour exclusion.
- Exclusions were removed too quickly.
- Overlapping segment audience
Solutions include, but are not limited to:
- Prior to sending the campaign, confirm that all the schools in your segment have approved the job, event, or fair registration because if they are not, the campaign will exclude them and result in a smaller audience.
- Be sure to review the exclusions applied, particularly the exclusion that prevents students from receiving a message from your company within a specific time frame, and modify as necessary.
- For example, you create a campaign for a career fair or event, and then send a job campaign immediately after. This can cause students to be excluded from the job campaign due to the default 48-hour exclusion, and if the "Received a message from" exclusion is not disabled.
- Do not send campaigns that utilize the same segment within 48 hours. The automated 48-hour exclusion will exclude students who have received a message from the user in the past 48 hours.
- If multiple exclusions are to be removed, allow the audience size to load after removing each exclusion. This will allow Handshake time to process each removed exclusion and recalculate the estimated audience size.
- Minimize the impact of overlapping audience segments by carefully reviewing and refining the segment criteria.
- For example, instead of grouping cities together based on their physical proximity, consider other characteristics such as organizations, extracurricular activities, or job role interests to ensure that they are unique and distinct from each other.
