Using School Explorer

The Explorer tab on the Schools page helps you find and connect with schools that align with your recruitment and engagement goals.

Note: Explorer is available only to Essentials and Enterprise customers with the Explorer module enabled.

Access Explorer

1. Click Schools from the left navigation bar in Handshake, then click the Explorer tab.

Apply filters in Explorer 

The Explorer tab includes filters on the left sidebar to help you identify schools with the largest number of students who match your selected criteria.

Available filters

  • Keyword search

  • Location interests

  • School year

  • Major category

  • Community and Technical Colleges

  • Institution type

  • Diversity and inclusion-focused organizations

  • Graduation date

  • GPA

  • Majors

  • Past companies

  • Past job titles

  • Organizations / extracurriculars

  • Skills

Tip:  Filters with a blue circle and “i” icon include additional context. Hover over the icon to learn more.

View suggested schools

Once at least one filter is applied, a Suggested schools section appears at the top of the page. It includes:

  • The total number of schools that match your criteria

  • The top recommended schools based on your criteria

Note: Only schools partnered with Handshake appear in the results.

You can further narrow the results by:

  • Excluding schools already in Favorites

  • Excluding schools you are approved at

  • Excluding schools you are not approved at

Schools are listed in order of how many students match all selected filters.

Understand connection status 

You can view your company's connection status for each school on the far right side of the school's name.

  • Favorite and request: You are not connected. Click the white button Favorite and request to add the school to your Favorites list and submit a request to join their network.

  • In favorites: You are connected, and the school is already in your Favorites list.

  • Add to favorites: You are connected but have not added the school to your Favorites list. Click the white button Add to Favorites to add it.

Take bulk actions 

To take action on multiple schools at once:

1. Check the box next to the name of each desired school.

2. Once selected, the following bulk actions will appear:
