Your ability to send messages depends on your account type and the part of Handshake you’re using.
Where employers can send messages

Matches (tab)
Message students who appear in the Matches tab of a job posting. Learn more about Job Matches.

Messaging requirements
Partner institutions
- Basic and Plus employers must have at least one approved or closed job posting at the institution where the student(s) attend. Learn more in Understanding Job Posting Approvals.
Handshake Open
- To connect with students and alumni in the Open Network, Basic and Plus employers must have at least one approved or closed job posting at any partner institution. Learn How to Connect with Handshake Open Network.
Note: Essential and TES employers can message students without posting a job. Premium features are for Handshake Premium accounts only. For more information, please check out this resource!
Additional requirements
- If no job posting exists, the company must be proactively approved by the institution.
- The student must have an activated profile with visibility set to Community or Employers (not “Private”).
- Employers must remain within their account’s message limits. Explore your Message limits in Handshake.
