General Requirements for Withdrawing an Application
To withdraw an application in Handshake, the following conditions must be met:
The job posting must still be active (not expired)
Your application status must be Pending
Application Submitted Externally
If you clicked Apply Externally on a job posting, you were redirected to the employer’s application site (such as their website or an external platform). After applying, Handshake will display a prompt asking: "Did you apply for this job?"
Selecting No will withdraw the application from Handshake entirely.
Selecting Yes will update the posting to show: "You applied on [DATE]."
Withdrawing your application in Handshake does not affect any application you submitted on an external site. Only the employer can remove or withdraw your application from their system.
If you need assistance removing your Handshake application record, we recommend contacting your institution’s Career Centre. Be sure to include the job title and a direct link to the posting. The Career Services team can review the employer’s application preferences and may be able to remove the application on your behalf. If not, they may advise you to contact the employer directly to withdraw your application.
Application submitted through Greenhouse Integration
Some employers use Greenhouse to manage their application process. When applying for a job posted through Greenhouse, you'll receive a prompt before clicking the Submit Application button that says:
"Employer is using Greenhouse to track applications. To withdraw this application after submission, you will need to contact Employer."
Applications submitted via Greenhouse cannot be withdrawn through Handshake. Only the employer can remove your application from Greenhouse. If you need to withdraw, please contact the employer directly.
Application submitted in Handshake
If you applied directly in Handshake (not externally or via Greenhouse), you can withdraw your application as long as its status is "Pending". Once the employer has reviewed your application, you’ll need to contact your Career Centre to request a withdrawal.
1. Click your account icon in the upper-right corner of Handshake, then select on My Jobs.
2. Locate the job you’d like to withdraw from, then click the job title to open the job’s overview page.
Tip: Use the filters at the top of the page to narrow down your list of applications.
3. On the job overview page, click Withdraw Application.
In the confirmation popup, click the red Withdraw button to confirm that you want to remove your application and cancel any associated interview schedules.
Application attached to an Interview Schedule in Handshake
If your application is linked to an interview schedule in Handshake (e.g., for an on-campus interview), you can still withdraw your application as long as it's in the "Pending" review stage. Once the employer has reviewed your application, contact your Career Centre to withdraw.
To remove your application from an interview schedule:
1. Click your icon, located in the upper-right corner of the page, then click My meetings from the dropdown.
2. In the upper-left of the page that loads, click the On-Campus Interviews tab.
3. Locate the relevant interview schedule, then click on it to remove your application.
If the employer re-opens a job that was previously posted on Handshake, and you were declined at that time, you’ll need to connect with your institution's career centre to help withdraw your application so that you can re-apply.
To find your institution's contact information, refer to How to Locate your Institution’s Contact Information in Handshake.
To re-apply to a job after withdrawing an application, you may do so at any time as long as the job posting is still active (not expired). For more information on applying for jobs in Handshake, refer to Apply for a Job in Handshake.
