Handshake collects preferences from employers along with work authorisation information directly from students to increase transparency and improve the application process.
By surfacing employer preferences and student responses, employers reduce the amount of time they spend reviewing and interviewing candidates they cannot hire, whilst gathering more information about applicants without requiring them to disclose their work authorisation status.
Application Qualification
Before submitting their first application, students are prompted to answer work authorisation questions, based on job requirements. The selections on this prompt will determine whether or not a student is fully qualified for the job based on the preferences set by the employer.
Students can still apply for jobs even if their stored work authorisation information does not align with the employer’s requirements.
Refer to European Work Authorisation Overview (for Students) for information on details collected from students.
Work authorisation preferences on job postings
Employers can specify required work authorisations and indicate willingness to provide visa sponsorship when posting a job.
In “Candidate qualifications”, fill in the desired information to set preferences:
- This job requires work authorisation. (checkbox)
- This job is eligible for visa sponsorship. (checkbox)
- Countries of authorisation (multi-select textbox)
Reviewing applications
When reviewing applications in the applicants tab, located within the job postings details page, the "Qualifications" column displays the employer preferences each candidate meets, presented as a number, for example: 1 of 3, 2 of 3, 3 of 3, etc.
If a student meets all employer preferences, a green check mark icon is displayed to the right of the numbers.
Hover over the number in the "Qualifications" column for details:
- A check mark is shown next to preferences met.
- A circle with a slash is presented next to preferences not met.
When a student selects "Prefer not to answer these questions", the student is FULLY QUALIFIED for all positions with work authorisation requirements.
Filtering applicants based on work authorisation
On the same applicants tab, use the filters at the top of the applicants table to "View only those who match my qualifications".
Add a checkmark next to Work Authorisation to filter on applicants that are fully qualified based on the preferences set.
