Students have three options for profile privacy in Handshake, which you can read more in depth about in Profile Privacy Options in Handshake.
By choosing the Community privacy option, students choose to make their profiles public to their peers, thus facilitating peer to peer learning. Only students who opt-in to campus profiles can see the profiles of other students who have also opted-in at their school.
Why are Campus Profiles Important?
We want to enable peer to peer learning amongst all students! You might not know what kind of work experience or projects to include on your profile, or you may also be curious about potential paths for a given major. Now you'll be able to learn from other students at your institution instead of struggling to fill it out alone or requiring a career counseling appointment.
How to Opt-In to Campus Profiles
Select the Community privacy option during your account set up, or you can edit this privacy setting later by taking the following steps:
1. Click on your account icon in the upper-right corner of the page, then click on Settings & Privacy.
2. Select the Community option, then click Save Update at the bottom of that page.
What a private profile looks like:
When your profile privacy is set to Private or Employers, you'll be able to see other students and alumni listed in the community, however, you will not be able to view their profile or send them a message.
When you click on the student/alum's name, you'll see a pop-up appear with more information on Handshake Community, along with the options Join or Not Now. Join will update your privacy settings to Community, while Not Now will retain your current privacy settings, and you will not be able to view the profile.
What a public profile looks like:
When your privacy is set to Community, you'll see an option to message the student/alumni in the message list.
When you click on the student/alum's name, you'll be able to see their profile with the following fields:
- My Journey
- Work & Volunteer Experience
You'll also be able to initiate a message to them from their profile.
Campus Profiles FAQ
Are alumni able to opt into campus profiles? Yes! If you'd like to filter the list to Alumni only, use the "Alumni Only" filter on the left of the students page.
Are campus profiles school specific? No, students who opt-in to campus profiles will be able to see other students who have opted-in across Handshake. Students can filter on their institution only to narrow results. A student can only see another student's profile if that student has also opted-in. Again, the goal is to enable peer to peer learning!
How do students opt in to campus profiles? In settings, there is a separate opt-in option to make your profiles public to other students, called Community. All students’ profiles are defaulted to private.
What information can students see on other students’ profiles? Students can see each others' School Year, Graduation Date, College, Major, Work Experience, Organizations/Extracurriculars, Courses, Projects and Skills. They cannot see other students' GPA, Work Authorization, Email address, Ethnicity, Gender, Hometown or Documents such as resumes.
