Recommended schools are schools with the highest number of candidates who meet your job's location and qualification criteria.
You can review, customize, and post jobs directly to these schools to reach the most relevant candidates.
Features available only to Premium partners are indicated by an asterisk (*). For more information, please check out this resource.
Access recommended schools
1. Click Jobs from the left navigation bar, then select the relevant job.
2. On the job posting page, click the Schools tab.
3. The page displays a Recommended schools section at the top, with a Customize recommendations button in the upper-right corner.
Each recommended school is displayed as a card and includes:
- School name and location
- Number of qualified candidates based on the job's criteria
- A Post job here now button
To view additional recommendations, click Load more to view up to 25 schools.
If no schools can be recommended based on your current qualifications or job location, a banner appears. From the banner, you can take any of the following actions:
- Click Edit locations to update the job's location.
- Click Edit qualifications to update candidate qualification criteria.
- Click Customize recommendations to manually adjust recommendation filters.
How schools are recommended
Employers are matched with schools based on the following criteria:

Location: Schools within 250 miles of the job's primary location.
- If a job includes multiple locations, the first listed location is used by default. You can change this by customizing your recommendations.
- If "various locations" is listed instead of a specific location, no geographic filter is applied.

Candidate qualifications:
- Work authorization
- School year
- Graduation date
- Major groups
Customize your school recommendations
By default, recommendations are based on your job's existing candidate preferences and primary location.
1. Click Customize recommendations in the upper-right of the Recommended schools section.
2. A panel will appear on the right side of the page with available filters.
All employers can customize recommendations based on the following:
- Candidates meet your job's qualifications: Your current preferences are displayed. To edit, click Edit qualifications.
- Their school is near your job location(s): The selected locations are listed with a range of 250 miles. If this option is unavailable, the job's location type is set to remote.
*Essentials and Enterprise (formerly TES) customers can also customize recommendations based on the following:
- *They want to work near your job's location: Students who have expressed interest in jobs close to your posting's location(s). Select from a radius of 5, 15, 30, 50, 75, 100, or 250 miles. When a posting lists multiple locations, any student who has expressed interest in at least one of those locations is counted as a match.
- *They're interested in roles like this one: Students who have indicated interest in the job role(s) associated with your posting. For more information on job roles, refer to Job Roles and Job Role Groups.
- *They're interested in your industry: Students who have expressed interest in your industry. Confirm or update your industry in your company settings. To view all industries in Handshake, access the Employer Industry Name List.
Post a job to a recommended school
1. Click the Post job here now button on the school card for the school you want to post to.
Note: Schools that have declined your company approval will not appear in the Recommended schools section.
2. In the pop-up, choose the application's open and close date, then click Post Job.
3. Once posted, a confirmation banner will appear within the school card.
4. The posting will appear in the Requested Schools section of the Schools tab with a Pending status until reviewed by the school. For more information, refer to Understanding Job Posting Approvals.
