Ready to start using Handshake? Great! Here are five steps you can take to jump-start your Handshake experience!
Step 1 - Login to Handshake
If your institution has partnered with Handshake, you should have a link from the email your Career Services Centre sent you - click this link to login to Handshake and claim your account.
If you don't have an invitation email from your institution, try going to the Handshake login page, and search for your institution name from the dropdown menu to proceed. Institutions are listed in alphabetical order, and only the first 25 are displayed. If your institution isn't included in the dropdown, click in the search box and type in your institution name to locate.
- Can't find your institution? If your institution isn't displayed in the list when searching by name, it's possible they are in the process of implementing Handshake and are hidden at the moment. Refer to Institution Not Found on Handshake for more information.
Once you've selected your institution, sign in by either using your institution's provided login option or by entering your .ac.uk email address.
- Try logging into Handshake using the same User ID and password you use to log on to your institution's website (to check your account or access the library for example).
- If you’re unable to login successfully with your institution User ID and password, or if you're an alum, try resetting your password on Handshake (using your institution email address as your User ID). For more information, refer to Log In as an Alum: Set your Handshake Password.
If you try to sign in and there isn't an account on file for you, you'll be prompted to set up an account. Select I'm a Student or Alumni to proceed with account creation.
For more information on creating an account in Handshake, refer to The Student On-boarding Experience.
After creating a new account, you'll need to connect with an institution in order to access more Handshake features, including job postings and messages. This process is either an automatic approval based on your email domain or a manual approval by your Career Services centre.
For assistance with approvals, you can either reach out to your institution's Career Services centre as you normally would, or submit a ticket to our Support Team to request more information.

You'll need to decide on your profile privacy level – read more about these options Privacy Options in Handshake.
Step 2 - Upload a CV
You'll likely want to have a public CV available on Handshake for employers, and your institution's Career Services department to have access to.
To learn more about how to upload a document, refer to How to Upload a New Document.
Step 3 - Fill out your Profile
Once you've uploaded a CV, you can use it to fill in your profile - refer to Build Profile from CV for more information.
If you choose Employers or Community privacy level, keep in mind the more information you add to your profile, the easier it will be for employers to find you and make more thorough decisions about whether or not you might be a good fit for their job opportunities!
For more information on filling out your profile, refer to Completing your Profile in Handshake.
If there are already details in your profile, this means your institution partners with Handshake and has pre-loaded your information, usually based on data from the institution registrar. Check to be sure all pre-loaded information is correct, especially your course; if you find any errors, contact your institution's Career Services Centre to correct it, as Handshake is unable to change any of your profile data.
Step 4 - Explore Handshake
Use your home page, the left navigation menu, and filters to look for companies, events, and jobs you're interested in learning more about or applying to.
Learn more about resources on your homepage in An Overview of Student and Alumni Accounts in Handshake.
You can always save your searches in Handshake, so finding relevant employers and jobs can be easily accessed later.

Step 5 - Follow jobs and employers you're interested in
When you follow an employer or a job, you can begin filtering based on the companies you follow. You'll also receive alerts when a job application window is closing or when an employer is attending an event or fair at your institution.

Once you've taken these five steps, you'll be on your way to using Handshake to help you efficiently and effectively launch your career!
