Employers can connect with students in the Handshake open network by sharing jobs. Essentials and Enterprise customers have additional ways to connect through messaging, events, segments, and campaigns.
The open network includes students from accredited four-year institutions and community colleges in the United States that are not yet Handshake partner schools. These students can create Handshake accounts to explore employer profiles, apply to jobs, and use many of the same career features available to students at partner schools.
Posting jobs to the open network
When creating a job post, select the option available for your plan:
- Basic and Pro: Select Auto-select schools.
- Essentials and Enterprise: Select Post to full network. This option is only available for jobs that meet Handshake’s standard posting criteria.
This automatically shares your job with all schools in your network and with students in the open network.
Jobs must meet the standard Handshake posting criteria:
Approved by at least one school
Paid position
Not an on-campus, co-op, or federal work-study role
Not located at a residential address

Search and message
Essentials and Enterprise customers can search for and message open network students directly. Learn more in A Guide to Talent List.
Invite students to events
Essentials and Enterprise customers with the Handshake Events module can invite open network students to virtual or off-campus events by sharing the public event link.
- Students with a Handshake account can sign in and register.
- Students without an account can register as guests and choose to create a profile later.

Use segments and campaigns
Essentials and Enterprise customers can include open network students in segments and use those segments in campaigns to promote jobs, events, or employer brand initiatives.

Automatically imported jobs
Handshake also automatically imports jobs for eligible Basic employers. Newly imported jobs are available to open network students and candidates without a school affiliation without first being posted to a partner school.
After claiming an imported job, you can post it to individual partner schools through the standard posting and approval process. Learn more in Imported Jobs on Handshake.
